Course description

This programme offers registered midwives an opportunity to engage in postgraduate education, in order to deepen and enhance their practice through acquisition, extension and critical appraisal of their knowledge and skills. The programme was written specifically for registered midwives, but shares modules throughout the School of Health Studies and a multiprofessional approach is used in teaching and learning.

The course is made up of 180 credits, 20 of which may be studied at Level 3, the remainder at Level M. Most modules have a value of 20 credits.

The first stage is made up of 60 credits, which may be an eclectic mix of modules leading to the Postgraduate Certificate in Midwifery, or made up of credits leading to a specific area of practice (eg PG Cert Women's Health). If you meet the University requirements for the award of Postgraduate Certificate you may exit at this point.

For the second stage of the course, the Postgraduate Diploma, you must take one 20 credit core module on research methods, from a choice of three research modules currently on offer. This module is normally taken as the last module prior to commencing the dissertation. You may then select a further 40 credits of optional modules from the postgraduate module portfolio. If you meet the University's requirements for the award of Postgraduate Diploma (in Midwifery, Advanced Clinical Practice, Diagnostic Hysteroscopy and Therapeutic Practices or in Sexual Health) you may then exit at that point.

To progress to the final stage of the MSc you must meet the University's requirements for the marks awarded in the first 120 credits, which are currently to obtain a mark of 40% or above. You may then proceed to the final 60 credit dissertation which is a 15,000 - 18,000 word study on a topic related to your area of practice.

To register for this MSc you must be registered with the NMC as a midwife, and also be in current employment in a midwifery capacity. You should also normally provide evidence of passing an undergraduate Honours degree or an Advanced Diploma course with a distinction.

If you are an unemployed new graduate, you may also be eligible to apply for:

PG Certificate in Advanced Clinical Practice (Midwifery)

PG Diploma in Advanced Clinical Practice (Midwifery)

PG Certificate in Diagnostic Hysteroscopy and Therapeutic Management

PG Diploma in Diagnostic Hysteroscopy and Therapeutic Management

PG Certificate in Sexual Health

PG Diploma in Sexual Health
