Course description

University of Kent

This new short course from the Centre for Child Protection is being offered at The University of Kent's Tonbridge Centre. 'Rosie 1' is a child protection simulation for use in CPD. Simulations offer a far more intense experience than that afforded by paper-based case studies or role play and have the added advantage of giving a child’s perspective. The simulations provide research-based case studies and opportunities to explore the complex dynamics involved in making professional assessments of risk and decisions in these contexts.

The simulation, unique to the sector, firmly places the University of Kent on the national and international radar for this innovative learning technique. Simulations transform research findings into usable and interactive resources tackling difficult practice issues. Products of collaborative working with local and national agencies, the simulations provide tools of excellence for multi-agency practice.

‘Rosie 1’ is relevant and useful to newcomers to the field, and those with more experience, and helps consider the potential and possibilities of learning through new technology. New technologies offer original, relevant and exciting ways to learn and engage with complex and challenging topic areas. The session has broad disciplinary relevance and will enhance delegates’ understanding of the potential for enhanced learning through technology.

Workshop content

Delegates will participate in a half-day session which will combine lecture delivery with seminar discussion.

  • What is a serious game/simulation?
  • What are the benefits of the use of technology in professional training?
  • How did the CCP develop ‘Rosie 1’ and why?
  • Playing the game
  • The Making of ‘Rosie 1’- video podcast

‘Rosie 1’ is FREE and can be downloaded from the University’s website www.kent.ac.uk/sspssr/ccp. We encourage participants to play ‘Rosie 1’ prior to the session, but this is not essential to participation and learning.

There are no prerequisites to joining these workshops: all participants are given a good grounding in the application of simulations in a child protection setting. However, participants should be aware that these courses form part of a series of workshops available from the Centre for Child Protection.
