Course description
Since the first genomes were sequenced in the 1990s, the use of computational methods to deal with large data sets has become an increasingly important part of molecular biology. This course is delivered by research groups active in bioinformatics and computational biology.
As well as covering the traditional areas of genome sequencing and protein sequence and structure analysis, the course covers the computational and statistical skills necessary to deal with high-throughput measurements of gene expression (microarrays) and the proteome. The more recent developments associated with high-throughput DNA sequencing (gene expression measurement by RNA-seq, transcriptional regulation monitored by ChIPseq and personal genomes) are included in an advanced module that also provides an introduction to data integration and systems approaches to molecular biology research.
A significant feature of the course is the integration of teaching with wet laboratory biology, leading to an understanding of data generation as well as analysis, which is an increasingly important part of modern bioinformatics.
This programme consists of 180 credits comprising:
55 credits of compulsory core research training modules
85 credits of a compulsory research project
40 credits of taught specialist bioinformatics and genomics modules
