Course description

Speaker(s): Sarah Hartridge, Dentist/Clinical Teacher, University of Portsmouth Dental Academy

Description:

Undiagnosed and untreated periodontal disease is one of the fastest growing areas of litigation. Clinicians need to assign a correct ‘working’ diagnosis to a periodontal patient in order to care plan effectively. Clinicians also need to understand the significance of biofilm control in the treatment of periodontal disease. This CPD activity will explore the management of patients with periodontal problems and is aimed at GDP’s and DHDT’s wishing to keep up-to-date with new developments or requirements.

Aims:

Overall aim:

To improve periodontal care for patients through a deeper understanding of their needs.

Specific aims:

1. To help clinicians achieve good clinical outcomes for their periodontal patients in both NHS and private practice.

2. To help clinicians motivate and empower their patients towards better periodontal health.

Objectives:

1. To assess and explain risk factors for periodontal diseases.

2. To explain the principles of non-surgical periodontal therapy.

3. To explain the importance of dental plaque biofilms for oral and dental disease, and the motivational aspects of treatment.

4. To discuss treatment approaches and selection criteria for specialist referral.

5. To discuss periodontal treatment outcomes and long term maintenance for treated patients.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Make a periodontal assessment and institute a care plan with clear therapeutic goals.

2. Apply the principles of non-surgical periodontal therapy to provide high quality care for periodontal patients.

3. Recognise that an effective oral hygiene regime can help control dental plaque biofilm and associated periodontal diseases.
