Description:
If it relates to their field of practice, the GDC highly recommend that dental professionals do at least five hours of radiography and radiation protection in every CPD cycle. Attending this course will contribute towards IR(ME)R operators’ and practitioners’ life-long learning and the hours requirement of verifiable CPD.
Aims:
Overall aim:
To provide IR(ME)R continuing education and training in dental radiology.
Specific aim:
1. Bring learners up-to-date with changes to legislation concerning dental radiography.
Objectives:
1. To explain the principles of medical radiation physics.
2. To outline the health and biological effects of ionising radiation.
3. To discuss radiation protection and the factors affecting radiation doses in dental radiography.
4. To discuss the requirements of IR(ME)R.
5. To outline what is required for a comprehensive quality assurance programme for X-ray equipment.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Describe the fundamentals of medical radiation physics.
2. Describe the benefits and risks of ionising radiation.
3. Recognise the principles of radiation protection and summarise the factors affecting radiation doses.
4. Recognise statutory responsibilities.
5. Implement a quality assurance programme.
