Course description

London King's Cross Revisited

Wednesday 5th June 2019

1.50pm to 5.10pm

In 2001, Argent, was selected as development partner by the land-owners, in the creation of a new mixed-use neighbourhood, with its own postcode, N1C. Today, this rich and varied place of homes, offices, cultural venues, shops, restaurants, schools – and a signature destination in the University of the Creative Arts – is reaching final stages of completion.

Set within 67 acres, of which 40 per cent is publically accessible landscaped space, are an array of buildings by leading architectural practices such as Allies & Morrison, Wilkinson Eyre and Stanton Williams, with the largest building of all currently underconstruction – a mega-ground-scraper HQ for Google, designed by Thomas Heatherwick & Danish group Bjarke Ingels. Thomas Heatherwick’s ingenious ‘kissing-roofs’ designer shopping mall, known as Coal Drop, will be completed this year. Quality of design, construction and landscaping – and speed development – have within a very short period, made King’s Cross Central, both a destination in its own  right and an integral part of the capital’s urban fabric.

Meet in St Pancras main line station at The Meeting – large statue of embracing couple situated at the southern end beneath the station clock. This course consists of two elements: a guided walk and a lecture.

The learning outcomes of this course provide an understanding of:

• an appreciation of the complexity of urban regeneration

• understanding of mixed use developments

• an explanation of synergy provided by individual developments to other developments

• the relevance of a sense of space and place in design

Speaker

David Thompson is a former Magazine Art Editor and now London Blue Badge Tourist Guide and City of London Guide. He lectures in the History of English Architecture both historic and contemporary.
