Course description

Introduction to Upholstery

Undertake a small upholstery project of your choice. You will cover a range of topics, including: safely using upholstery tools, measuring and estimating material, stripping frames and replacing the required materials.

Suitable for both beginners and those with some experience.

This course is ideal for anyone interested in learning more about upholstery and upholstery techniques. It is structured around the item that you bring in to work on, with each student learning patricular skills tailored to their specific item, but you are also encouraged to watch while other students are being shown techniques related to different styles of upholstery, particularly where your own item does not require the more general techniques.

Suitability - Who should attend?

There are no formal entry criteria for this course.

Our part-time provision is designed primarily for adult students, aged 19 and over. Students aged 16 to 18 may be allowed to enrol on the course at the discretion of the Head of Admissions and Head of School.

Training Course Content

Total beginners should start off with a small item (a drop in seat or a footstool). More experienced students can work on a project of their own choice (after discussion with and advice from the tutor).

The course will be practical, with students taking their own notes to complete portfolios of their work. However, this class is a leisure course and therefore there are no exams.

Students will develop their skills relating to their specific project work, which will include some or all of the following:

Use of basic tools such as the mallet and ripping chisel or staple remover, the webbing stretcher, the magnetic hammer and the pneumatic stapler. The applying of webbing and hessian. An understanding of how to measure and cut foam. Temporary tack and tighten calico. Tie springs in place - cover and stitch in springs. Measure and calculate for top cover fabric. Cut and fit top cover fabric.

Students are expected to be able to finish their workpiece to a high standard.
