Course description

A Horticulture or Landscape Supervisor can manage a site with minimum supervision, supervise a team and maintain the health and safety and security of personnel and resources. They can be employed to oversee work in public parks and gardens, green spaces and historic gardens, private gardens and estates or in production nurseries and retail outlets.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Apprentices who do not hold maths & English L2 or GSCE grades 4 (C) will need to complete these prior to Gateway.

You must have secured a position with an employer and be ready to start working with them before you can begin your apprenticeship course.

Training Course Content

You will learn a range of core knowledge, skills and behaviours including:

  • Plant health, growth, development and identification, soil evaluation and management
  • Project planning, processes and specifications
  • People management and teamwork

If you choose the horticulture pathway, you will also learn:

  • Supervise the cultivation and maintenance of soft landscapes e.g., trees, shrubs, herbaceous and bedding
  • Develop maintenance programmes for horticultural sites, scheduling work to protect features including turf and aquatic environments
  • Use and maintain a range of irrigation systems

If you choose the landscape pathway, you will also learn:

  • Supervise the installation of landscape features, measuring and setting out from construction/design drawings
  • Site survey, assess and repair hard structures, evaluating hazards and damage
  • Hand and bench cutting of landscaping material using abrasive wheels

Course delivery details

Delivered one day a week at our Lackham campus during term time only (can be delivered remotely if needed) and in the workplace with a visit from your tutor every 10 to 12 weeks.

As part of the apprenticeship programme, you’ll need to record a minimum of 6 hours per week ‘off-the-job’ training time. This can include college attendance, work shadowing, training, workshops, online learning, tutor sessions, revision, webinars, industry visits – anything that supports your learning on the apprenticeship and supported by your dedicated assessor.

This programme is assessed by a knowledge test, practical exams, professional discussions and a project with presentation and written report in preparation for your EPA. Your tutor will arrange college lessons covering both theory and practical learning.

On successful completion of the Horticulture or Landscape Supervisor Level 3 Apprenticeship you will hold the qualification of the Apprenticeship Standard plus PA1, PA6 and Level 3 Emergency First Aid.
