How to get a job as a Drilling Engineer? - Forum

I hold an MSc degree in Chemical Engineering. I have taken courses in petroleum production and foundational drilling. My project was on flow assurance in oil field development.

Now I am very much interested in becoming a Drilling Engineer. Honestly, I am so confused how to take myself to the drilling professional level I see myself.

I write to seek your help to kindly list the necessary trainings and development courses, cost and duration in sequential order that i will need to undergo to make me a competitive and hire-able in the job market.I will be overjoyed if this request is granted. Please note the training can be anywhere. I am not restricted by distance or geography.

Hi there,

thank you for posting this question.

The Oil & Gas industry is a bit of a special one in the sense that, despite being a highly technical industry that requires a great level of expertise, it does not have any specific framework of qualifications that are required to get a certain job in the industry. By that I mean that, while your employer will of course want you to be qualified for the job, there are no specific courses or training paths that you should follow.

So it's understandable that you don't quite know where to turn! My suggestions is to first take a look at our specialised Oil & Gas career guide, which covers the different areas of the industry and tells you the kind of jobs you can aim towards in each sub-sector, including drilling. You can then take a look at the Well Construction & Drilling category and find a bunch of courses from well-known training providers, and perhaps contact a few of them to ask for more information and advice. My guess is that with an MSc in Chemical Engineering and specific academic experience in oil and gas, you really won't need a lot more training to aim for an entry level position!

As a last suggestion: have you tried looking on any job sites? Aside from the main ones, there are a number of more specific sites for the oil and gas sector, so you can go there and see what kind of requirements employers are specifying for the kinds of jobs you would be interested in. Whatever is missing from your CV is most likely what you need to go for!

I hope this helps a bit. Best of luck to you!
