What is Engineering?

Engineering is the art, science and discipline of acquiring and applying technical, scientific and mathematical knowledge to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems, and processes that safely realize a desired objective or invention. As a concept with roots in ancient times, engineering has been a feature of everyday life as humans devised fundamental inventions such as the pulley, lever, and wheel. The modern day definition of engineering refers to the exploitation of basic mechanical principles to develop useful tools and objects.

Exploring the opportunities of engineering

Engineering is a broad discipline which is often broken down into several sub-disciplines, all of which concerns themselves with differing areas of engineering work. Although initially an engineer will be trained in a specific discipline, the engineer may become multi-disciplined through their career, having worked in several areas. Engineering is a profession that ranges from large collaborations to small individual projects. Almost all engineers are required to complete industry-specific update training throughout their careers which engineering courses such as those listed above can provide.

Training and Courses in Engineering

Training in engineering is as diverse as the industry itself. Engineering courses are available in a wide range of topics, whether it be the theoretical understanding of techniques and methods or the engineering in practical application. Within its various fields, engineering courses are available on the subjects of advanced maths, engineering software, the construction of buildings and structures, the development of technology and machinery and much, much more.

In the engineering field, it is common for engineering to practice continuous learning. For some, this could mean keeping up with the latest technologies, methods and theories and learning how to apply them to their current roles. For others, formal engineering training can lead to opportunities in other areas of the field.

The practical application of engineering

Engineering has played a role in the construction of many of the buildings, tools and technologies which define our everyday lives. Engineering ensures that buildings stand strong, that vehicles operate efficiently and safely, and that technology is available to make everyday tasks simple. Beyond its physical presence, engineering concepts and methods are commonly used in the design of the intangible processes that bring order to chaos. Some areas in which engineering can be applied are:

  • Mechanics
  • Construction
  • Electronics/ Electrical
  • Aviation and aeronautics
  • Biomedicine and bioscience
