SIA Course & Security Training: Get SIA Licensed Today

SIA stands for Security Industry Authority, and it signifies that your security course is approved by the SIA. An SIA licence is a legal requirement for anyone working in security, and can be obtained after undergoing and successfully completing an SIA course.

What is an SIA course?

An SIA course is necessary for anyone wanting to obtain an SIA licence, which is a legal requirement for anyone working in the security industry. An SIA licence is proof that you have completed your SIA course and you are qualified to provide security. As of 2001, it is illegal to practice in the industry without one.

How do I get an SIA licence?

After you have selected, attended and passed the SIA course you require, you send off your application for your SIA licence. Provided you have passed your qualification, your licence will usually be sent to you within 25 days of application.

How long is an SIA Licence valid for?

SIA licences take between 25 days and six weeks to process and most SIA licences are valid for three years. The notable exception to this is vehicle immobilisation security, for which the SIA licence is valid for 1 year, rather than 3. You do not need to take refresher training when you renew your licence.

Who can take an SIA course and apply for an SIA licence?

Generally, you need to be aged 18 and over to take an SIA course and obtain your SIA licence. You may also be asked to do a First Aid course, for which the minimum age is 16.

Which SIA course do I need?

The SIA licence you require will depend on the type of job you do, or want to do, but SIA courses have specialist training areas for the following roles:

  • Door supervision
  • CCTV supervision and public space surveillance
  • Cash and valuables in transit security
  • Close protection security
  • Security guard
  • Vehicle immobilisation security
  • Key holders

Ensure you select the right SIA course for you and your needs by contacting your preferred training provider.

How long does an SIA course take?

The duration of your SIA course will vary, depending on which one you have selected. Generally speaking, SIA courses take between 2 and 5 days. The Close Protection course is an advanced course, spanning 15 days (and 140 hours in total). To find out exactly how long your SIA course will take, ask your provider or check their course page for duration information.

Can I take my SIA course online?

Often a portion of the SIA course training is available online. For example, for Door Supervision training usually involves 1 day of distance learning, where you complete a module by yourself at home. You will then attend on-site training to learn the specifics of conflict management, health and safety, safe working procedures, legal requirements and more.
