Course description

This course is the UAL Level 2 Award and Diploma in Music Performance and Production.

 This study programme is perfect for those first steps into music education. The course was designed with a view to progressing learners onto further music programmes at Level 3 at Activate Learning and, eventually, the music industry.

GCSE maths and GCSE English complete this programme, offering you a second chance to get those valuable qualifications within a one-year programme, if required.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Minimum of 3 GCSEs grades 3 (D) or above including English and usually maths.
UAL/ BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Music performance/production.
If you do not have a grade 4/C in GCSE English language and/or maths you will be required to be working towards achieving these alongside your music course.
You will need to demonstrate previous musical experience, either with recorded examples (Mp3, YouTube and Soundcloud are all acceptable examples) or an audition. A satisfactory reference is also required from the previous school or college.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

The majority of students completing the UAL Level 2 Award and Diploma in Music Performance and Production will progress to further study via ‘applied general' or ‘tech-level' qualifications. Some students may progress directly into entry-­level roles in the creative industries.

Training Course Content

The qualification will provide students with:

  • An introduction to a range of activities essential to the development and delivery of music performance and production such as composition, listening skills, the process of rehearsal, technology and delivery of a music performance and production as a collaborative activity.
  • An Introduction to the diversity of roles and responsibilities within the music performance and production sector, the importance of health and safety as integral to the performer and production and the personal and professional characteristics needed for a career in the music industry.
  • An introduction to the communication skills used in music performance and production allowing exploration of the specific skills and attributes required for communicating with an audience. An opportunity to demonstrate understanding through the performance and production.
  • An opportunity to research the history and context of music performance and production and develop understanding of the value of contextual research in informing practice.
  • An opportunity to integrate and use previously acquired skills, knowledge and understanding and to explore and develop more specific techniques, skills and attributes for music performance and production.
  • An opportunity to integrate and use skills, knowledge and understanding and to explore and develop specific techniques, skills and attributes for music performance and production.
  • An opportunity to take greater responsibility in the management of an assignment of personal interest and prepare for progression within a chosen discipline.
  • An opportunity be involved in a music performance and production.

 

Course delivery details

The course consists of units which focus on underpinning the skills, knowledge and understanding that support all music performance and production activity. The units have been designed to allow colleges to deliver them in a way that meets the specific needs of their students, taking into account college resources, relationships with local creative employers and responding to the fast-paced nature of the creative industries.

The UAL Level 2 Award and Diploma in Music Performance and Production has been designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to progress to further study and training in a range of art and design subjects, including fine art, photography, graphic design, fashion, textiles, product design and others.

The qualification has been designed for students who have an interest in music performance and/ or music production or a related subject who wish to explore and extend this interest via a full time, immersive learning experience. Many students will have I identified a specific career in the creative industries that they wish to progress to (e.g. performer, songwriter, producer, engineer etc), using this qualification as a starting point.

The content of the UAL Level 2 Award and Diploma in Music Performance and Productionwas developed with representatives from universities, further education colleges, sixth form colleges and employers to ensure that it provides students with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to progress to the next level of education and training.

The qualification is made up of eight units and students must successfully complete all of them – all units are mandatory. The units focus on underpinning the skills, knowledge and understanding that support all music performance and production activity. The units have been designed to allow colleges to deliver them in a way that meets the specific needs of their students, taking into account college resources, relationships with local creative employers and responding to the fast-paced nature of the creative industries.

The qualification is made up of eight units and students must successfully complete all of them – all units are mandatory.

Students are also assessed via a ‘Final Major Project' which takes place at the end of the course when they are at their best. This large project allows students to demonstrate all the learning that has taken place through completion of the other units. This unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and determines the overall qualification grade.
