Course description

Our equine tutors and assessors are based at our Merrist Wood College in Surrey, However, they can deliver this programme entirely within the workplace. If this interests you, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Set within an industry steeped in tradition, yet embracing innovation and technology, this Senior Equine Groom Apprenticeship will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to coordinate the day to day care of horses in the workplace. You will possess all the necessary skills to lead by example and will have the knowledge required to implement effective systems relating to the running of the yard. You will also be capable of organising and monitoring the quality of work and ordering and maintaining supplies.

On successful completion you will be capable of looking after a small to medium sized equine yard and supervising a diverse team of workers. You will be capable of offering advice, support and guidance to your team, whilst possessing appropriate people skills necessary for your chosen sector. You will be required to have a sound base of experience and knowledge and have the right empathy so as to promote the horses’ physical and psychological well-being within a safe working environment.

You will have a sound knowledge of horse anatomy and physiology and the ability to assess and promote health. You will be able to recognise and treat common minor injuries and ailments. You will be capable of presenting horses to a high standard and can demonstrate the skills required to groom, plait and clip horses.

Suitability - Who should attend?

You need to be employed in a suitable position and hold a minimum level 1 (GCSE 2 to 9) maths and English. If not already achieved, the apprentice will have to achieve level 2 English and maths Functional Skills
