Course description

The programme aims to provide relevant education and training leading to employment within the sports industry. The programme reflects a vocational approach to a diversified industry and aims to give a learning experience combining theoretical course study with practical skills in a competitive environment.

The BTEC Sports qualification is for anyone who is interested in having a career within the sports and leisure industry, or to prepare you for further studies at university. This course will give you the confidence needed to progress further into your future career.

You could work in careers such as:

  • coaching
  • sports development 
  • teaching
  • governing bodies
  • club administration
  • fitness instruction or personal training
  • leisure centre management 
  • sales and marketing

 

You will take part in trips and visits from external speakers and will have access to extensive outdoor facilities.

  • Taught by expert tutors with industry experience.
  • Brand new strength and conditioning gym with lifting platforms, resistance machines, full dumbbell rack, cardio equipment (including a Watt bike) and 20 metre track.
  • Strong industry links, providing you with excellent work experience.
  • Three grass football pitches and technical training area.

Suitability - Who should attend?

At least four GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) or above, including maths and English, or a Level 2 Diploma at Merit or above.

You will also need to pass the reference and interview process.

Unit 1 – Anatomy & Physiology

Unit 2 – Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being

Unit 3 – Professional Development in the Sports Industry

Unit 4 – Sports Leadership

Unit 6 – Sports Psychology

Unit 7 – Practical Sports Performance

Unit 9 – Research Methods in Sport

Year 2

Unit 5 – Application of Fitness Testing

Unit 8 – Coaching for Performance

Unit 17 – Sports Injury Management

  • Unit 19 – Development and Provision of Sport

Unit 22 – Investigating Business in Sport and the Active Leisure Industry

Unit 23 – Skill Acquisition

Unit 30 – Exercise, Health & Lifestyle

These units are subject to change.

All 16-19 year olds on full-time programmes will be required to retake GCSE English and Maths or to undertake Functional Skills, if they have not already attained the equivalent of a GCSE grade C in these subjects, every year of their course, until they complete their studies.

  • 1 Exam in Anatomy & Physiology (Unit 1)
  • 3 Controlled Assessments in Exam conditions:

Unit 2 – Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being

Unit 19 – Development and Provision of Sport

Unit 22 – Investigating Business in Sport and the Active Leisure Industry

 

Independent study will be required to complete assignments in order to meet deadlines.

Assignments come in different forms and can either be written assessments, demonstration, presentations, log books and more.

There will be an expectation that you will participate in regular training sessions in your own time to maintain an appropriate level of fitness for this course.

Expenses

While it is not necessary to have a high level of physical fitness, students will be expected to undertake physical activity as part of the course.

Due to the specific nature of the course there are additional costs for clothing, visits, travel, outdoor activities etc. Fees are payable at enrolment.
