This two year, part-time qualification gives learners the knowledge, skills and competencies required to work as a therapeutic counsellor in an agency context.

It is designed to lead to an employed or voluntary role in a counselling agency in both healthcare and non-medical settings.

Learners with sufficient experience can also begin working as independent practitioners in private practice on completion of this course.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Places on this course can only be confirmed subject to places being available, and with the following conditions being met: 

  • You must have undertaken and proficiently passed the CPCAB Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills and CPCAB Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies or their equivalent recognised qualifications (gaps in training of more than 2 years between Level 3 and Level 4 may not be considered) .
    This can be verified by providing: a Level 2 and 3 Certificate from a reputable training institution which abides by the Ethical Framework and guidelines set out by a recognised counselling association e.g. BACP. and a portfolio of work.
  • Candidates should have a grade C/4 in GCSE English or a Level 2 equivalency in order to meet the academic demands of the course.
  • Candidates must be interviewed for suitability by a qualified counselling tutor before a place can be confirmed on the course.
  • Minimum candidate age, 19 years old. 
  • Be able to identify reasons for training beyond just personal development
  • Academically and emotionally able to cope with this level of training**
  • Ability to work with difference and diversity
  • Possess the openness and ability to benefit from self-development
  • Ability to form a therapeutic relationship 
  • Possess the qualities of self-awareness, insight, honesty and integrity
  • Emotional stability and the absence of personality disturbance*
  • Ability to challenge and be challenged
  • Ability to respond sensitively and empathically to others
  • Capability to begin working with clients within an agency setting
  • Are intending (and actively seeking) to begin work with clients during year 1 of the programme

*This qualification is not suitable for those who are currently in a state of severe emotional difficulty and/or severe psychological distress. **The nature of this course involves experiential elements that will involve some personal disclosure and associated personal developmental activities.

Disclaimer: Please note that if an applicant has experienced a significant life event in the last 6 months i.e. Bereavement or recovery from a mental health issue, the college has the right to refuse the application and will recommend deferring due to the demands of the course. This can be discussed at interview.
