Course description

About the course

Enhance your framing skills by learning how to make impactful mounts to present your artworks.

What will the course cover?

The place where framing can achieve the most impact and increase the perceived value of any art form is through mount design and decoration. Whether producing framed work for hanging at home or for sale, you will be amazed at the effects achieved. In short, this day will provide the perfect launchpad for an exciting, more dramatic way of presenting your images.

The day is both for complete beginners and for those who need hands-on experience to help them create a dramatic, unique look for their artwork or photography. We will cover a range of practical skills and understanding of products used in mount cutting and decoration, and over the day you will produce a portfolio of mounted artwork.

The main areas covered are:

  • How to choose the right mount & style for your artwork.
  • How to measure and plan your projects.
  • A range of cutting techniques using a mount cutting system.
  • How to cut single mount, double mount & shadow mounts using a mount cutting system.
  • How to plan & cut a multi-aperture mount with several openings for a group of photos.

Suitability - Who should attend?

What previous experience should I have?

It is an advantage to have attended the Basics Of Framing course. The skills learnt there, such as the use of specialist tools and general principles of marking up mounts for cutting, are developed in this course. However, complete novices will find that there is enough time to learn about the basic skills of cutting mounts as they work through the training programme.

The course is aimed at people who;

  • Have limited or no previous experience of working with hand tools.
  • Have some experience of mounting and framing pictures, but no experience of using the specialised tools available to framers.
  • Want to receive support in honing current skills.
  • Want to use graphic art as part of home improvement or refurbishment.

Whether involved in art, photography or needlecraft, interested in starting up as a hobbyist, home business or professional framer or simply wishing to present or conserve images you own in professional and creative ways, the mount cutting course is a great extension to skills acquired in our Basics of Framing course.

I followed up a previous course, Basics of Framing, with this workshop and found it interesting and helpful. It was involved but the trainer was supportive and gave clear instructions with useful demonstrations. The day moved quickly, I am happy with what I made although some tools weren’t very easy to use .
