Coping with Cyber Risk

When a cyber incident occurs, it’s essential that business leaders have a toolkit of measured responses that are suitably swift and effective, to enable their organisations to cope with informed decisions, and actions that contribute to the overall resilience of their business.

This course will advance your ability to plan for the future and understand how to react and lead from a non-technical perspective when your organisation is faced with the realisation of cyber threat.

Suitability - Who should attend?

This course is for senior leaders working in operational roles such as finance, HR, business engagement, and facilities. It is of particular value to those in non-technical roles who will be affected by cyber incident and will have to cooperate with the emergency responders who will be charged with minimising the technical impact of such situations.

Delegates should have decision-making responsibilities in the event of a cyber incident to be able to fully grasp and put the learnings from this course into practice.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a Manchester Professional Certificate. Paper copies of certificates will be given to you on the last day of the course. Within ten days of completing the course, you will also receive a digital certificate and digital badge to share across your social media.

The course contributes to the Manchester Professional Development Programme.

Training Course Content

Course topics

This practical four-day course will explore a number of themes in relation to cyber risk, including a case study over the duration of the course to apply your learning.

Day one:

  • Learn the intelligence-led approach to cyber security
  • Analyse examples of cyber security incidents

Day two:

  • Review the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) categorisation of incidents
  • Participate in a counter-phishing exercise
  • Hear from a leading industry speaker and gain valuable insights from their experience

Day three:

  • Understand the challenge of cyber risk across the supply chain
  • Explore the evidence needed when cyber incidents happen

Day four:

  • Learn valuable insights from a guest lecture and discussion
  • Understand how to declare when information is secure ‘enough’
  • Explore how senior leaders should behave when cyber incidents occur

There will be a networking drinks reception on evening one where you will get to know your course colleagues. There will also be a course dinner on evening three, offering the opportunity for your class to come together with a wider cohort of short-course learners to expand your networking opportunities.

Course Lead

Daniel Dresner is the first Professor of Cyber Security at the University of Manchester.  He joined the University after 22 years with The National Computing Centre where he designed DTI’s Towards Software Excellence programme, created SANS’ BS 7799 training, edited the UK’s first national security breaches survey, and co-wrote the standards for IT departments, SMEs, and source code escrow.

He takes a diverse community-based approach to cyber security, running exercises to help cope with the risk of online harms, particularly amongst young people. His research is centred around balancing people and technology for successful cyber security. 

Daniel contributes to books, conferences, and has appeared on the BBC explaining cyber security to the wider community. He is a Fellow and Founder member of the Chartered Institute of Information Security. Daniel was voted a top 20 cyber security influencer worldwide 2018-2021 and Best Educator at the Security Serious Awards 2022.
