Course description

This course is designed to give you a thorough introduction to esports as well as new evolving online media. At present over 50% of the UK is gaming and there is an ever-increasing industry that is emerging as a result, short form content and live streaming are replacing traditional media content. This course offers students the ability to apply creative media production techniques to online content in the form of streaming competitive matches, creating vlogs, editing replays, creating promotional material, writing reviews, and learning about the industry.

There are a range of transferable skills throughout the course that range from teamwork, communication, networking, organisation, time keeping, strategy, active listening, critical thinking, and work ethic under pressure. As well as these skills students will also learn about filming, editing, graphic design, journalism, marketing, web design and more.

Students will be encouraged to enter various tournaments and competitions throughout the course and creative projects will be part of this to make sure everything they do counts towards their career.

The first year of the course will introduce students to the required skills to be able to create creative media content. Students will have bot set and independent projects to work on whilst improving their researching skills and develop their knowledge of the industry and how they can better focus their skills to suit a growing and thriving industry.
Students wishing to be recruited to the college esports team will be required to maintain 95%+ attendance and stay up to date with their coursework.
Q&A for Parents and Guardians that are confused what this course actually is?

• Is the course just playing games? – Not at all. We offer a look and practical skills within this new emerging workforce, students gain skills in production and event management, content creation, marketing, public relations, directing, filming and editing, sound design, visual effects and more.
• What careers are available following this course? – There is a wide range of skills involved in esports including communication, time-management, meeting deadlines, teamwork, leading not just to work within the games industry but the wider creative media industry as a whole.
• This will limit university places – The course sits under the UAL Level 3 Creative Media Production specification and students will leave with this qualification and UCAS points to go to University if this is the route they wish to take.

We currently play in British Esports Student Champs tournaments competing in:
• Valorant
• Rocket League
• Overwatch
• League of Legends
• FIFA (AOC Sport cup)

We encourage all students to take part in these tournaments but competing is not mandatory.

Suitability - Who should attend?

A range of methods, which may include projects, assignments, case studies, course work, self-assessment, feedback from clients and panel reviews, continually assesses course work. Grades from Pass, Merit, Distinction may be awarded to course work.

The Study Programmes are over 3 days each week.

There is regular one to one tutorial provision.

Continuing Studies

This qualification helps you to progress on to:

• BA/BSc/FdA at a Higher Education institution
• Apprenticeships within the wider commercial/ creative based industries and supported through Cambridge Regional College
• Employment e.g. broadcast production, analyst, events management, PR/Marketing, Production Manager, Journalist, Content Creator, Pro Gamer, Shoutcaster/host, editor, director and graphic designer.
