Course description

This pre-degree intensive course is an experience which will form the foundation of your professional arts practice for the rest of your professional life. Nurturing your understanding of global art, encouraging risk taking and invention this Study Programme will allow you to work to your strengths and embrace areas for development. The UAL L3 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design is a highly regarded course which has helped individuals to progress onto outstanding places in Higher Education and win national awards and commissioned work.

The course is delivered over one year and is a progression route for learners who have completed A-Levels or have completed a Level 3 Extended Diploma from an Art and Design or a Creative Media related course but would like an extra year to broaden their awareness, applied thinking and extend their critical understanding and independence.   This course assists individuals to make an informed decision when applying to a Creative Industry course at higher education.


Purpose of the qualification

Solve complex problems through the application of Creative Industry skills through each of the following three Parts.      
Part 1: Diagnostic Investigation into Creative Practice - Where you will experience tasters in either the Art and Design area or the Creative Media area.
Part 2: Developing Specialist Practice - Here you will select a specialist pathway in within your chosen area - Art & Design (Fine Art /3D, Visual Communication or Fashion & Textiles) or Creative Media (Games Design, Film Production or Animation).
Part 3: Consolidating Practice - Gives you the opportunity to take control of your own learning and demonstrate your achievement by independently initiating, researching, completing and evaluating a project proposal and realisation within your chosen professional context. This will be internally/externally moderated at Level 4.

The course will provide opportunities to explore, challenge and develop:

• True individuality, thinking and skills development by applying contextual studies knowledge and personal reflection.
• Critically review the effectiveness and appropriateness of methods actions and results
• Critical and contextual awareness of different perspectives and approaches within the creative Industry.
• Communicate effectively with peers both giving and receiving criticism in a constructive and professional manner.
• Ability to work cross discipline and at level 4 through the final major project.
• Employability skills e.g. team building, leadership, advocacy, self-management, organisation, presentation, peer support as well as adaptability and problem-solving.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Course work is continually assessed by a range of methods which may include assignments, case studies, course work, self-assessment, feedback from clients and panel reviews. Summative assessment is applied to your Self-Initiated Final Major Project Art Proposal this is graded as: Pass, Merit, Distinction There is regular one to one tutorial provision.

Training Course Content

Continuing Studies

This qualification helps you to progress on to:

• BA/BSc/FdA at a Higher Education institution.
• Advanced apprenticeships within the wider commercial/creative based industries and supported through Cambridge Regional College.
• Employment e.g.  junior designer, moving image assistant, or self-employment.
