This course provides practitioners with the practical and technical knowledge and skills required to deliver advice in England and Wales relating to trust and estate accounting. This Advanced Certificate can be taken as part of the STEP Diploma.

It is assumed that applicants have, as a minimum, experience and knowledge of succession and estate administration in their own jurisdiction and will have a fundamental knowledge of Excel.
Outcome / Qualification etc.
Upon completion of this qualification, you will be able to:
- Understand the principles of trust and estate accounting.
- Define, construct and interpret trust and client estate accounts and value assets.
- Identify the trusts for which accounting is required in modern practice
- Understand the principles of and law governing the investment of the trust fund
- Understand how to allocate receipts and payments between capital and income
- Understand rules pertaining to the allocation of funds between capital and income where the beneficial interests differ
Course delivery details
This course is available for study twice annually, with intakes beginning in January and July (and assessments taking place in May and November).
The course is delivered through a combination of online learning and three workshops and will take four months to complete.
Enrolment onto this course will include the following:

o Attendance at three live online workshops
o Self-assessment materials
- Examination fees.
The course is assessed by way of an end of course five-hour open-book written examination.
A fundamental knowledge of Excel is required for the course
Once you have successfully completed this course, you will gain 30 diploma-level credits towards STEP membership and be awarded the STEP Advanced Certificate in Trust and Estate Accounting (England and Wales)
