Course description

In veterinary practice we see many patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases. From heart failure to syncope to murmurs, we have to nurse them all! This course covers a wide range of situations you may be presented with, including anaesthesia of the cardiac patient, and we will teach you to tackle them head on.

By providing an insight into cardiovascular pathophysiology you can fully understand what is happening on the inside, why certain drugs were chosen and how your nursing skills can really make a difference. The nursing involvement and spotting early signs can really make a difference to the patient’s outcome.

Specific areas to be covered

  • Pathophysiology – what actually goes wrong
  • Clinical Signs – what the owner will notice
  • Triage Skills – Important point to assess
  • Clinical Examination – subtle signs and what they mean
  • Diagnosis – what tests will the vet ask for and why?
  • ECG’s – interpretation skills and when to worry
  • Management – what do the drugs actually do?
  • Monitoring – the importance of re-assessment
  • The “Do’s and Don’ts” of anaesthetising the cardiac patient
