Course description

It is well recognized that animals of any age feel pain and that this should be treated appropriately. The practice of evaluating pain during a normal clinical examination is part of common practice in human medicine but is challenging in animals. This day of lectures will include physiology of pain; practical ways of evaluating pain in small animals; guidelines for assessment and treatment of pain; and overview of commonly used analgesics in veterinary practice.

Specific areas to be covered:

  • What is pain? How do we know if an animal is feeling pain?
  • What tools do we have for pain assessment in small animals?
  • What are pain scales? How and why are they being used? Let’s talk about pain faces!
  • What treatments do we have available to treat the pain?
  • Are analgesic therapies safe? What are the concerns and side-effects?
  • What adjunctive therapies can be used?#
