Course description
This full day course will cover three important aspects of emergency medicine; discussing assessment and stabilisation of the canine heatstroke patient (its not just cooling!), along with some of the most common poisoning emergencies in dogs and cats, and finally pain management in our small animal patients.
SUN
• Presentation and stabilisation of canine heatstroke
• How to recognise SIRS/DIC multiple organ failure and what we can do about it
• How do we approach treatment for heatstroke complications?
• Ongoing management and monitoring to ensure optimal outcome
PAIN
• Case based discussion of analgesic options for traumatic and medical disease processes
• Side effects of analgesic drugs
• Multi-modal approach to analgesia
• Pain scoring and assessment
• Nursing care provision
• Alternative approaches to systemic analgesia
POISONS
• Approach and stabilisation for common intoxications
• Use of adsorbents and antidotes
• Discussion of intralipid therapy in specific toxicities, including a review of the evidence
• Pros and cons of gastric lavage
• Specific nursing consideration for different types of toxicities
• Nursing care of patients that present extra challenges!
