Course description

RQF Level 2 Student First Aid

The Government announced that health education will become compulsory in all state-funded schools in England from September 2020 and this includes basic first aid training.

Under the new statutory guidance, the Department for Education has recommended secondary school students should be taught how to administer CPR, the purpose of defibrillators (AED’s) and basic treatments for common injuries. In addition, primary school students should be taught the concepts of basic first aid including how to make a clear and efficient call to the emergency services.

The RQF Level 2 Student First Aid course is designed to provide students with essential knowledge and skills to respond effectively in first aid situations. This course aims to equip students with the confidence and competence to provide immediate assistance to injured or ill individuals until professional medical help arrives.

The course includes:

  1. Basic Life Support (CPR): Students will learn how to recognize and respond to a casualty who is unresponsive and not breathing normally. They will be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques, including chest compressions and rescue breaths, to maintain circulation and oxygenation until further medical assistance is available.

  2. Managing Breathing Emergencies: Students will gain knowledge and skills in recognizing and managing common breathing emergencies, such as asthma attacks and choking. They will learn how to provide appropriate assistance and support to individuals experiencing difficulty breathing or airway obstruction.

  3. Dealing with Bleeding and Wounds: Students will learn how to assess and manage different types of bleeding, including severe bleeding, nosebleeds, and minor cuts or wounds. They will be trained in applying direct pressure, elevating the injured limb, and using appropriate dressings to control bleeding and prevent infection.

  4. Treating Minor Injuries: Students will acquire knowledge and skills to provide basic first aid for minor injuries such as burns, sprains, strains, and fractures. They will learn how to apply appropriate techniques, such as cooling burns or immobilizing injured limbs, to minimize further harm and promote recovery.

  5. Recognising and Responding to Medical Conditions: Students will be introduced to common medical conditions and emergencies, such as heart attacks, seizures, allergic reactions, and diabetic emergencies. They will learn how to recognise the signs and symptoms, and provide appropriate first aid support until professional medical assistance arrives.

  6. Incident Management and Communication: Students will learn the importance of effective incident management and communication in first aid situations. They will understand how to assess the scene for potential hazards, prioritize care, and communicate effectively with the casualty, bystanders, and emergency services.

Upon successful completion of the RQF Level 2 Student First Aid course, students will gain a fundamental understanding of first aid principles and the confidence to respond appropriately in emergency situations. Students are encouraged to periodically refresh their knowledge and skills through refresher courses and stay informed about updates in first aid practices.
