Course description

Best in class training: Equipping you with a practical toolkit to drive Continuous Improvement within your own business.

Five day interactive and 'hands-on' bootcamp, delivered Monday - Friday at our head office in Trafford Park, Manchester.  Includes five-days classroom delivery plus support in the delivery of an improvement project to demonstrate learning and to secure accreditation by the Lean Competency System (LCS).

Designed to fit around you and the demands of a busy manufacturing business, we offer the Continuous Improvement Practitioner Programme (CIPP) in two delivery formats.  This course is the 'Bootcamp' format, delivered in one week. There is an alternative course format available, which is one day per week, delivered over five consecutive weeks (see website for more details). 

The CIPP is accredited to Level 1c of the Lean Competency System, equivalent to the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.

Suitability - Who should attend?

  • This programme is specifically targeted at first-line leaders or anyone new to a management position who wants to improve their leadership and management skills.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

Day 1: 

  • Understand the purpose of business​ and the importance of organisational alignment through purpose and vision.

  • Walk through and recognise the history of Industrial Continuous Improvement ​and the Toyota Production System.

  • Describe the five continuous improvements (lean) principles and how these can be used as a framework to eliminate waste, improve flow and reduce costs.

  • Understand the application and be able to select core tools and techniques of continuous improvement.

Day 2: 

  • Understanding the 5 Lean Principles and being able to identify Value and Non-Value adding activities.

  • Understand and apply organisational systems thinking,  how systems influence or behaviour which in turn impact the results we achieve.

  • Learn how the theory of constraints can help to identify the most important limiting factor and how to maximise throughput.

  • Understand the principles of various mapping techniques and how these can be used to identify opportunities for improvement.

Day 3: 

  • Understand how the Seven Basic Quality Tools can be used to solve most business problems.

  • Use problem-solving and decision-making tools and techniques to determine root causes and select the best solutions.

  • Understand variation and statistical techniques to support problem-solving and improving systems.

  • Use 8D, A3 & PDCA cycles to effectively resolve, plan, and communicate problems and CI initiatives.

Day 4: 

  • Understand how the Seven Basic Quality Tools can be used to solve most business problems.

  • Use problem-solving and decision-making tools and techniques to determine root causes and select the best solutions.

  • Understand variation and statistical techniques to support problem-solving and improving systems.

  • Use 8D, A3 & PDCA cycles to effectively resolve, plan, and communicate problems and CI initiatives.

Day 5: 

  • Understand how to apply kaizen to reduce waste, improve flow, ensure a safe working environment and exceed customers’ expectations.

  • Understand that, as people, we are all different; therefore, communication and learning approaches must be selected to meet our needs.

  • Understand organisational alignment and how to develop, deploy, execute, measure and communicate the organisation's strategy.

  • Understanding and applying coaching and mentoring techniques to help individuals and teams be the best they can be.

  • Understand change management techniques to achieve sustainable improvements for the organisation.

Training Course Content

Day 1: Getting Everyone on the Same Page

This session is designed to get everyone on the same page by ensuring that all students clearly understand the history and principles of continuous improvement and an overview of the foundational concepts, tools and techniques of continuous improvement.

Day 2: Learning to See

This session is designed to build on the knowledge gained on day one. It introduces the learners to organisational systems thinking and understanding the various mapping tools and techniques that can be used to help us better understand the value streams, and processes and to solve problems and reduce waste in our organisations.

Day 3: Solving Problems

This session introduces the learner to continuous improvement and quality concepts, tools and techniques to collect and analyse information, solve problems and implement demonstrable and sustainable root cause solutions.

Day 4: Enabling Flow

This session brings all five continuous improvement principles together. It focuses on enabling flow, understanding the differences between planning and scheduling and how to implement quick change overs and reduce downtime.

Day 5: Bringing it all Together 

In this final session, we introduce various approaches to help the continuous improvement leader coach, mentor and facilitate sustainable organisational improvements that are aligned to the organisations purpose.

Course delivery details

Meet your course leader:

Vanessa is a Principal Improvement Consultant, Coach and Practitioner with 20+ years of global experience facilitating business transformation at scale in Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Logistics, Retail and eCommerce.  A Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt, certified project manager and Level 6-qualified Associate Member of the Institute of Leadership, she helps organisations to unlock efficiency, engineer value and drive performance in their operations.  Vanessa started her professional life as an artist before moving full-time into graphic design at Hallmark’s sole UK production site where she was quickly promoted to Operations Manager.  After attending a Kaizen event in 2012, she discovered the power of Lean thinking and went on to deliver 7 major transformation projects for the business.  When the site closed in 2014, she moved to the Supply Chain & Logistics function of supermarket Wm Morrison, leading £25 million in systems, technology and process improvements.  After gaining her Master Black Belt in 2017, she spent 12 months at Lean Six Sigma consultancy Game Change before being headhunted for the role of Operations Director at eCommerce operator Ogden Fulfilment. There, she increased operational capacity 5-fold and doubled company turnover during the peak of the pandemic before establishing a new Lean operating model at Segen Ltd, a global distributor of solar energy systems.  

Vanessa now leads Education Practice at Manufacturers Network where she fuses her experience with a deep commitment to developing leaders, managers and operators.  Passionate about creating supportive spaces which also challenge thinking, she coaches sustainable performance solutions through a peer-to-peer model of knowledge transfer.
