What you will learn

This is a practical course. We will start with a demonstration of how to make silver ear wires for drop earrings, whilst also looking at examples of manufactured/bought ear findings and the application of both kinds. You will make a pair of ear wires for drop earrings and solder on handmade silver ear posts for stud earrings to ‘dummy’ earrings in copper. We will also look at the most appropriate positions for ear wires and ear posts on earrings and how the placement affects how the earring hangs on or from the ear.

  • You will make a simple s-hook catch for a necklace or bracelet and we will discuss how you can use this process to create catches to match your own jewellery designs.
  • We will look at examples of different brooch pins, both single and double and where and when you would use them. You will make a brooch pin for a ‘test’ brooch, either single or double depending on the size and shape of the brooch and your ability.
  • After individual discussion with the course tutor you will make a finding, a brooch pin, a catch or ear backs to ‘complete’ a piece that you have made and brought with you to complete.
  • Each technique for manufacturing the findings will be demonstrated both to the group and to individuals as appropriate. We will explore how other jewellers have made individual fittings to suit the style of their work. The tutor will bring in a variety of examples/ illustrations.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress ou your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
