Course description

Drawing into Watercolour & Gouache

During the course we will be working from observation, aiming to develop your drawing abilities further, which in turn will inform your practice further. We will be exploring a variety of subjects including still-life and landscape through indoor studio work and local outdoor visits, weather permitting. After the half term break we will combine watercolour with gouache to explore subjects and techniques used by a range of artists.

You will learn the basic principles of observational drawing and be shown how to interpret visual information. During the course you will learn watercolour and Gouchae techniques and paint from a variety of subject matter. The aim of the course is to help you develop your skill as a watercolour painter and also improve your drawing skills. It is suitable for any students wanting to improve existing skills as well as for beginners. The class offers a supportive environment with assistance and encouragement from your tutor.

Course delivery details

Materials Required: What to bring to the first session: Pencils – HB (or a selection of your own choosing) sharpener, Putty rubber, Cartridge or similar sketch book A4 or A5, One pad of watercolour paper not less than 140lb (A4 your choice), The Langton, Bockingford or Putney School of Art paper is excellent. Brushes – size 10 or 12 and 1” flat brush, sable or synthetic (Please bring what you have if you have already purchased some). Paints Pans rather than tubes but tubes OK if already bought – Cotman and Windsor and Newton do a boxed set of colours which are fine. 500ml bottle of water, small container.
