Course description

The EUSR Safety, Health and Environmental Awareness (or SHEA) schemes are an excellent way to provide a uniform approach to health, safety and environmental awareness within your company. The SHEA Gas one-day course is essential training for operatives of all levels (including supervisors and managers) who require access to gas operational sites, both permanent and temporary. It has been developed through careful consultation with the gas industry to give operatives an excellent understanding of key workplace health, safety and environmental issues.

Suitability - Who should attend?

All individuals requiring access to operational sites within the gas industry, including supervisors and managers.  

There are no pre course requirements for this course.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:

Understand the legal frameworks with regards to health, safety and the environment, as well as their practical application in the workplace setting, including their own personal responsibilities and those of their employer.

Understand key environmental considerations in the workplace, and the employees’ impact on the sustainability of their workplace environment. 
Identify and control workplace risks and hazards and understand their own role in preventing them through a range of proactive health and safety behaviours, in line with CSCS requirements. 

Understand the processes and procedures required to work in public and private environments, including on the highway.
Identify the risks associated with pressure regulating gas installations and identify safe working practices when working on AGIs, unmanned sites and non-odourised sites. 

Identify the common hazards found in domestic and commercial gas premises and name control measures which need to be applied to diminish these risks.
Explain the term ‘occupational health’, identify a range of occupational health hazards within the workplace and be able to minimise their impact. 

Understand emergency response behaviours, the role of reporting, inspection and enforcement of health & safety in the workplace. Understand the impact on employee and employer of both poor/improving health and safety in the workplace.
 

  • As this course is affiliated with the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS), it allows utility workers access to CSCS controlled sites without the need to carry additional, separate cards.

  • On completion of the course the candidate will have EUSR registration for SHEA gas for five years from the date of assessment. 

  • All content is placed within an understandable context so candidates can see how the learning materials will apply to their daily work.

  • The training course is fully interactive and specifically designed to cater for differing learning styles which means candidates are constantly fully engaged with the course content.

  • All trainers have appropriate training, assessment and health & safety qualifications, allowing them to explain the course content clearly and answer candidates’ questions knowledgably. 

Training Course Content

The course consists of 9 modules -6 core and 3 gas industry specific- which cover the following learning outcomes:

  • Understanding our workplace responsibilities

  • Understanding the effects of our work on the environment

  • Identifying and controlling risks

  • Common hazards in the workplace

  • Highway working and excavations (additional, gas industry specific module)

  • Pressure regulating installations (additional, gas industry specific module)

  • Safety in premises (additional, gas industry specific module)

  • Occupational health hazards

Course delivery details

This course is delivered by one of our fully qualified, Energy and Utility Skills approved tutors and includes:

  • Interactive Powerpoint presentation

  • Individual and group exercises

  • Discussion

  • Video clips

  • Assessment- each assessment criterion will be assessed through an end of module multiple-choice test.  Each module test consists of either 4,5 or 6 questions, dependent on the size of the module.  Candidates must pass each module to pass the programme and are permitted to get only one incorrect answer per module.
