This practical one-day hands-on course will focus on the latest approaches for the creation of an effective practice parasite control policy. The course will discuss the key and contentious issues relating to the creation and implementation of such a parasiticide policy. Emphasis will be placed on the role and importance that each member of the practice team has for the successful implementation of this policy. A concise and simple algorithm to help gather critical information from clients will be provided. The course will include numerous opportunities for hands-on wet lab practical exercises including quantitative faecal egg counts, nematode larval isolation and ectoparasite identification.

Topics Covered:

  • The importance of parasitic infection in dogs and cats; both for the pet animal and for their owner
  • Reasons for the increased spread of parasites within the UK
  • Factors that influence the risk of parasite infection
  • Where can vets find up-to-date information on parasite location/prevalence
  • Available licensed products and their relevance and limitations
  • How to be proficient in outlining the rationale for preventative therapy
  • Fitting lungworm prevention in with other parasite preventive measures
  • Discussing the cost implications

  • Which animals need preventive therapy
  • The evidence on the efficacy of (licensed/unlicensed drugs)
  • The relevance of differences/limitations in licensed indications
  • The adverse effects of the therapy and particular use in pregnancy/lactation
  • What makes an optimum frequency of deworming based on evidence
  • What to say to clients about preventive therapy
