Level 3 Certificate in Practical Animal Care Skills

This one-year, full-time level 3 Certificate in Practical Animal Care Skills is intended for learners aged 16 or over who wish to progress into employment or further study in the animal care sector, or for learners who are currently working in the sector, in paid or unpaid employment.

Accredited by ABC Awards, the qualification has been developed in consultation with employers, providers and Lantra, in order to confirm that the content is appropriate and consistent with current industry practice.

Suitability - Who should attend?

The following information provides students with the entry requirements for this particular course.

  • 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 or A*-C
  • Must include English, Maths and Science
  • Satisfactory references from most recent School / College / Employer

Training Course Content

Learners will gain practical skills, develop sound working practices, and essential industry knowledge to help progression into higher levels of learning or into sustainable employment within the animal care sector.

This qualification consists of the following mandatory and selected optional specialist units.

The mandatory content gives students a broad introduction on how to promote and maintain the health and well-being of animals, including identification of abnormal signs, monitoring, and maintaining accurate records

Mandatory Unit

  • Promote and maintain the health and well-being of animals

Students will also study the following selection of specialist units.

  • Promote and maintain the health and wellbeing of animals
  • Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security in the workplace
  • Plan the accommodation of animals
  • Plan diets and feeding regimes for animals
  • Plan the handling and restraint of animals
  • Recognise and interpret the behaviour of animals
  • Provide information on how to maintain the behaviour, health and welfare of animals
