The University of Nottingham

This unique and comprehensive Veterinary Surgical Training Academy’s intermediate level course covers the basic and intermediate concepts and techniques of wound closure and reconstructive surgery in small animals. It is a practical hands-on intensive one-day workshop covering the full range of fundamental commonly performed wound closure techniques. During the workshop each technique will be explained and demonstrated before each delegate is able to carry out the procedure themselves under close supervision. You can expect to carry out all fundamental surgical wound closure techniques during the day with emphasis on how each procedure can be performed in a reliable and safe manner.

Topics to be covered:

  • Instrumentation and suture guidance for wound closure and reconstructive surgery in small animals
  • Techniques for minimum skin tension
    1. Assessing skin tension and maximising use of skin
    2. Undermining techniques, multilayer closures, and walking sutures
    3. Dog ears, closure of semicircular, circular wound and square wounds
    4. V–Y plasty, multiple and single releasing incisions
  • Techniques for moderate to significant skin tension
      1. Single pedicle advancement flaps
      2. Bipedicle advancement flaps
      3. Transposition flaps
      4. Rotation flaps
      5. Skin fold flaps

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course delegates should have an understanding of:

  • Surgical principles, instrumentation and suture requirements for safe wound closure and reconstructive surgery in small animals
  • Hands-on practical experience of basic and intermediate wound closure techniques in small animals including techniques for minimising wound tension and the use of local subdermal plexus flaps
  • Outcomes, risks, complications - and their management - associated with each surgical procedur

 

 

Required delegate attributes or who this course is suitable for:
The course is suitable for qualified veterinary surgeons at any level of training especially those actually performing oncological surgery of this skin on a regular basis. Ideally (but not essential), delegates will have already attended the VSTA’s Veterinary Basic Surgical Skills course.
