Course description

The University of Nottingham

Emergency surgery in dogs and cats can be as rewarding as it is daunting. They often present as acute life-threatening cases demanding immediate and effective diagnosis and treatment.

This one-day course will cover the assessment and management of common surgical respiratory, abdominal and urinary emergencies in the dog and cat. Essential techniques including oxygenation, thoracocentesis, the placement and maintenance of thoracic drains, tracheostomy tubes, the placement of feeding tubes and urinary catheterisation will be described in detail. The surgical management of a number of the more common conditions such as gastric dilatation torsion and septic peritonitis will also be discussed.

Clinical cases studies and numerous video clips will be used to augment lectures with the aim of developing a logical approach to the management of these demanding cases.
