Course description

University of Oxford

As organizations seek to increase efficiency and cut costs in the increasingly challenging business climate, a focus on selecting, prioritizing and delivering the right projects that directly support the strategy of the organization is more important than ever.

Key to this strategic objective is effective Project Portfolio Management (PPM), a framework to ensure that investments in projects, resource allocation, monitoring and evaluation is optimised throughout project life-cycles and through to delivery and close-out.

In short, Project Portfolio Management ensures organizations do the right projects the right way."

Dr Eamonn Molloy, University Lecturer in Operations Management and Project Portfolio Management, Saïd Business School (SBS), University of Oxford

This intensive one-day course will introduce Project Portfolio Management (PPM) as a framework for improving organizations ability to effectively deliver multiple, interdependent, complex science and technology projects on time, on budget and to specification.

This involves not only effective project management discipline, but also ensuring that the organization is selecting, prioritizing and investing in the right portfolio of projects in the first place, optimizing resource allocation between them, and monitoring them throughout the entire project life-cycle through to delivery.

The objective is to offer a condensed, yet comprehensive overview of current and emerging best-practice methodologies and techniques for meeting the challenges of managing multiple, complex science and technology projects.

In particular, through case studies and workshop exercises, we will examine the following:

  • Projects as vehicles for delivering strategic objectives
  • Projects, Programmes and Portfolios: The Integrated Project System
  • Roles and Responsibilities of the PMO: Organization Design for Project Success
  • Project Portfolio Management (PPM) Process: Selection, Prioritization, Optimization, Metrics
  • Project Challenges for ‘Little Science’ and ‘Big Science’: From start-ups to major programmes.
