Course description

Fundamentals in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety

This module aims to introduce the key concepts of patient safety and risk. You will critically analyse and evaluate the impact of human factors theory and national patient safety policy on the reduction of risk and enhancement of safety in the workplace. You will also make critical judgement of the impact of legal and ethical frameworks for safe practice with a focus on professional accountability and codes of conduct.

  • Ability to study at level 7
  • Professional registration as a healthcare professional:
    • Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
    • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Working in health and social care.

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

  • Critically evaluate the concepts of patient safety and risk and how national and local patient risk and safety policies impact on your practice.
  • Evaluate the importance of carrying out root cause analysis and developed experience applying different analytical tools to real life scenarios.
  • Critically reflect upon how this learning can be used to improve patient safety in your own workplace.
  • Systematically and critically judge the mechanisms for escalating and communicatingconcerns within the legal and ethical frameworks required for safe practice.

Indicative module content includes:

  • Patient Safety policy: from micro to macro
  • Regulation and quality monitoring
  • National and local risk management policy
  • Error reporting
  • Human factors
  • Adverse incidents
  • Professional codes of conduct and accountability
  • Critical incident analysis
  • Root cause analysis and fishbone analysis
  • Introduction to quality improvement
  • Open and fair cultures.

Course delivery details

For the 2022/23 curriculum, our CPD moduleswill be delivered usinghybrid learning. This means that depending on the subject and content of learning and teaching, modules will mainly be delivered via a combination of face to face and online delivery, as this has worked really well for our practice-based colleagues. A couple of modules will be delivered solely online, however for most modules face to face contact time and attendance at the university will be required.
