Course description

The construction industry is one of the largest and broadest to work in, employing around 7% of the UKs workforce, and there is always a demand for skilled professionals. An apprenticeship in construction is a form of vocational training where you will follow an NOCN approved standard to develop skills and knowledge and then demonstrate and evidence your application in a construction environment. Site Carpenters and Architectural Joiners need to have a good eye for detail, as well as strong maths skills and the ability to follow instructions and technical drawings.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Minimum Functional Skills Level 1 or GCSE grade D in Maths and English.

All applicants will be required to pass initial assessments in Maths, English and ICT and an additional entry test.

Training Course Content

The intermediate Site Carpentry or Architectural Joiner apprenticeship allows you to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment or career progression in Site Carpentry or Bench Joiner.
It will give you the theoretical knowledge you need to succeed in the industry, the practical skills to produce work to a high standard, and an understanding of health and safety, materials and sustainability.
Site Carpenter

This apprenticeship will cover the following units:

  • Carry out first fix flooring and roofing
  • Carry out first fix frames, partitions and stairs
  • Carry out second fixing operations
  • Carry out carpentry maintenance
  • Set up and operate a circular saw

Architectural/ Bench Joiner

  • Inspect, prepare and operate fixed machinery including narrow bandsaw, crosscut saw, re-saw, surface planer, thicknesser, morticer.
  • Produce setting out details including interpret information for setting out doors, door frames and linings, windows with opening lights, fittings and straight stairs.s
  • Mark out including interpret information for marking out doors, door frames and linings, windows with opening lights, straight stairs and fitting parts.
  • Manufacture routine architectural joinery products including interpret information, prepare for production and produce door, windows with opening lights, straight stairs and fitting bespoke units.
  • Install a range of common ironmongery components for doors, windows and units using a range of hand and power tools.

Course delivery details

The duration of an intermediate apprenticeship in Site Carpentry or Architectural Joiner will take 24 months to complete and you will be required to attend college for 1 day per week during term time over two years. At the end of the 2 years you will be required to complete an end point assessment or EPA which will test your knowledge and skills and will be assessed by an independent external assessor.
