Course description

This qualification provides learners with the knowledge and skills needed to manage, practise and lead others in adult care provision. Learners will acquire and use skills of leadership, mentoring, coaching and reflection through work-based learning opportunities.The course covers a wide range of topics including:

  • leadership and management
  • governance and regulatory processes
  • quality assurance
  • safeguarding, protection and risk
  • communication, relationships and partnership working
  • person-centred practice for positive outcomes
  • professional development, supervision and performance management
  • decision-making skills
  • entrepreneurial skills and innovation
  • the management of specific services

This qualification is most suitable for those working in a managerial role in adult care settings who are looking to progress their career. It is also appropriate for managers who have not yet achieved a vocational qualification at Level 5.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Before a learner begins this qualification, an Initial Assessment is undertaken. This provides the evidence to determine the starting point of learning and assessment. This will include checking if the candidate has the language, literacy, and numeracy skills necessary to achieve the qualification, and this identifies what candidates needs to learn.

Learners without a recognised Maths and English qualification at Level 2, including functional skills, will be required to achieve this prior to completion of the certificate.

Learners will need to be working in the role of Deputy or Manager in an appropriate setting or have the opportunity to carry out responsibilities associated with these roles.

Training Course Content

Learners must achieve the 20 mandatory units (75 credits), and the remaining 15 credits from the optional units to achieve a minimum of 90 credits.

  • Resource management in adult care
  • Governance of adult care
  • Regulatory processes for adult care
  • Communication and information management in adult care
  • Partnership working in adult care
  • Outcomes-based person-centred practice in adult care
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in adult care
  • Continuous improvement in adult care
  • Professional development in adult care
  • Supervision and performance management in adult care
  • Safeguarding and protection in adult care
  • Health and safety in adult care
  • Risk-taking and risk management in adult care
  • Managing concerns and complaints in adult care
  • Manage self in adult care
  • Decision-making in adult care
  • Entrepreneurial skills in adult care
  • Innovation and change in adult care

All optional units will be discussed with an assessor upon application to the course.

Course delivery details

In order to complete this qualification, apprentices need to complete 20% off-the-job training during the on-programme phase of their apprenticeship. Specific rules govern this, and it must take place in the apprentice’s contracted hours. This will be explained to you in more detail upon application by your assessor.

All units are assessed by a designated assessor using a range of methods. This will include direct observations in the workplace, a portfolio of evidence and written assignments.
