Course description

Every year, we successfully train many students in becoming fully-qualified beauty therapists. By choosing a career in this industry, you will have the opportunity to combine creativity with customer care; helping people to look and feel great. Beauticians are specialists in discussing and understanding client requirements, analysing and advising on skincare and beauty regimes, giving treatments, and applying cosmetics.

This Level 1 course will give you a broad base of knowledge and you will learn how to perform effective beauty treatments. You will attend college full time, participating in practical salon and classroom sessions to gain hands-on experience of these wonderful treatments.

We will help you develop the skills you need to work in the beauty therapy industry, including:

Suitability - Who should attend?

This course is for school leavers aged 16+.

You should want to learn about the Beauty industry in manageable pieces and have an interest in hair and media makeup.

You must have achieved a grade 3 (D–E) in GCSE English at school.

You will also need:

  • good communication skills.
  • creative ability (desirable)
  • a positive reference/school report (including attendance and punctuality)
  • a GCSE English language grade 3–2 and a positive effort towards maths

A college, navy-coloured uniform and Level 1 kit is essential to purchase prior to starting the course. Information will be given prior to enrolment.

Training Course Content

The course is divided into 13 modules to include practical units in skin care, face painting, basic hand care, and manicure.

You will be required to complete a series of tasks to accompany each of the practical units in order to be successful in this programme.

You will study the following modules:

  • Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
  • Presenting a profession image in a salon
  • Skin Care
  • Hand Care
  • Basic Make Up Application
  • Themed Face Painting
  • Nail Art Application
  • Basic Manicure Treatment
  • Basic Pedicure Treatment
  • Create a hair and beauty image
  • Follow Health and Safety in the salon
  • Salon Reception Duties
  • Working with others in the Hair and Beauty sector

You will work towards GCSEs in both English and maths to enable you to work towards a grade 4. You will need a grade 4 at least in maths and English if you want to progress onto a level 2 programme the following year.

You will have a tutor throughout your course to support you and make sure that you are on track to complete your qualification.

Course delivery details

You will watch demonstrations of all of your treatments and then practice on a partner. Teaching and learning methods will be a mix of: theory, self-directed study, research and practical client sessions. You will begin by working on each other and progress to models.

All of your theory classes will be taught with the aid of a work pack and may also include research whilst in class. The majority of tasks will be completed whilst in class so that you can have help and support in understanding what is required. All work packs and tasks will be delivered and put onto our virtual learning site known as ALO (Activate Learning Online), so that you able to download any information needed.

The programme is divided into 13 units. Each unit has a practical assessment and a graded piece of work. There are three theory test papers included within the course. A portfolio of evidence will be built up during your course and practical observations of your treatments learnt and recorded.

You will be assessed on each of your practical treatments which are carried out on the general public as well as family and friends. A minimum of 95% attendance is required on the programme to ensure you are not missing essential information.
