Course description

This qualification offers an engaging programme to support learners who want to pursue a career in acting whilst also allowing learners to study related and complementary qualifications alongside it. It can prepare learners for a range of Apprenticeships in performance-related areas. When taken alongside further Level 3 qualifications, it supports access to a range of higher education courses in the performing arts sector.

  • You will explore the multi-faceted world of performing arts by developing your talents and an understanding of the fundamental skills, techniques and disciplines involved in being an actor.
  • You will develop core skills in acting for the stage and screen, which includes a focus on voice, movement, characterisation, communication, imagination, creativity, and ensemble devising work.
  • You will take part in numerous skills gathering workshops as well as rehearsing and performing play texts, devising unique pieces of theatre, and undergoing research projects to enhance your understanding and appreciation for theatre practitioners and acting techniques.
  • You will be taught by professionals with years of industry experience in the world of theatre, acting and dramatic theory.

Anyone who wants to further their performance, presentation, and storytelling skills. The course would work well alongside other creative subjects such as art and design, Media, and Music technology, humanities/ social sciences such as Psychology or Sociology or English Literature or Language.

Suitability - Who should attend?

At least four GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) or above, including Maths and English Language.
A passion for acting or a willingness to give it a go is important. You should be committed as you will be assessed through group work.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

Students can progress to Higher Education to study drama or a performance related subject at degree level at university. Some students would audition for Drama School.

You could follow a variety of different pathways, including: further study at university or drama school, start a theatre company, work as a theatre technician or technical manager, perform in a band, teach Drama and Performing Arts or write, direct or produce plays, pantomimes and musical theatre productions.

Course delivery details

Practical workshops, classroom lectures, visits to the theatre, visiting workshops. Students are expected to study outside of college in order to gain the most out of their studies. This may include extra rehearsals, as well as line learning, practising choreography and completing any necessary homework.

Homework:

In addition to completing homework tasks, you will be expected to attend extra rehearsals and performances outside of class time.

Expenses

A BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate is equivalent to 1 A Level.

It is useful for all students to have plain black clothes which allow free movement for some workshops and performance. Light, grippy, flexible shoes are also advised for all practical lessons.
