Course description

If you are interested in the sports and exercise industry, then you should look no further than this programme. Whether it's supporting elite athletes to reach their full potential, or introducing sport to a young person for the first time, with a career in sports you can play an important role in leading people to a healthy lifestyle.

You will learn essential skills and theory relating to all aspects of sports and exercise, one of the fastest growing industries in the UK, including:

  • anatomy
  • psychology
  • sports development
  • coaching
  • nutrition

Led by tutors with excellent academic and practical backgrounds you will enjoy learning more about what goes on behind the scenes of sports, different career paths for you to take and which aspect of sport and exercise science you would like to focus on in the future.

Previous students have gone onto work in sports coaching, professional sports academies, teaching and education, gym instruction and university.

If you're a keen basketball player and 16–19 years old, you have the opportunity to apply for theBasketball Academy Level 3as an enrichment programme, alongside the Sport Level 3 National Extended Diploma.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Five or more GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above including English language, science and maths or BTEC level 2 Diploma grade Merit or Distinction plus GCSE grade 4 (C) or above or Functional Skills at level 2 in English and maths.

Applicants will be invited to attend an interview and complete an internal assessment.

All students will have their literacy and numeracy needs supported within the programme.

  • Skill Acquisition in Sport
  • Sports Massage
  • Sports Injury Management
  • Sports Psychology

You will also improve the broader skills vital for success in further study or employment including:

  • self-confidence
  • speaking in front of others
  • working with others
  • taking responsibility
  • managing your time

By the end of the course you will have benefited from a valuable insight into future careers open to you.

Course delivery details

Approximately 80% of your time at college is classroom-based with an active approach to the theory subjects.

The rest of your time will be spent on practical activities in the sports hall or gym, such as fitness coaching or practical sport.

A strong emphasis of the practical sessions is placed on working and learning with others and you are regularly set tasks to complete in partnership with other students.

You also need to be able to work independently and take responsibility for your own learning.

Throughout the course you have the opportunity to demonstrate your skills by participating in community activities and schools partnerships.

You will also have ongoing tutorial support to help you achieve the qualification.

Individual learning targets are set each term and you receive regular feedback on your progress in meeting these targets.

Formal assessment is through assignments projects presentations and practical assessments which are set at regular intervals throughout the course.

The functional skills in English maths or ICT is assessed by an external exam.
