BTEC Diploma in Fashion Design Level 2 (1 year):

What will I learn?

The course develops an understanding of design in fashion/tailoring and the skills required to construct garments to a professional standard using both traditional and modern techniques.

Significant focus will be on pattern cutting and constructing specific garments as well as vital skills for setting up your own business. There will be elements of creativity and design through embellishment and fashion illustration techniques which will allow you to draw your own designs. In addition to this, you will trial design sampling through experimenting with materials and techniques used in garment construction. The great British sewing bee, here you come

Project work will give students basic hands on knowledge of a range of vocational areas within the field of fashion. By the end of the course students should have built up a portfolio of work demonstrating a wide variety of skills and techniques.

There will be opportunities to visit exhibitions, museums and galleries and be involved in art and design competitions.

How will I be taught?

You will study a range of art, craft and design topics through project work. These projects will require you to be able to plan, produce evidence of research, come up with ideas, develop them and make a finished product (eg picture, poster, model etc). You will then evaluate your work. Deadlines are tight so you will need to use private study time as well as timetabled lessons. You will learn new skills and techniques. All students are expected to provide a basic set of equipment and materials.

How will I be assessed?

Six of the fashion units are assessed through coursework set and marked by the course team. The last two art and design units are assessed through a major project set by the examining board and initially marked by the course team. All assessments are verified by a visiting standards moderator. Key skills units are assessed through coursework and multiple choice tests.

What can I do after this course?

The BTEC First Diploma in Design can lead to:
BTEC National Diploma in a specialist design area including Fashion and Textiles, Garment Construction and General Art and Design and employment.
