Course description

Sports Coaching (Level 3)

Many people believe or think that sports coaches are the same as sports trainers. While many coaches are also qualified to train and instruct, their wider remit is to help and encourage participants to achieve their full potential. It’s more about working with them to get their attitudes, lifestyle and focus right.

Coaches often work with teams as well as individuals, ranging from professional sports people to community teams or school groups. Their primary function is to improve performance.

Sports coaches often advise on training programmes and their components, such as diet, sleep patterns, mental stimulus and external activities. It’s this mix of psychological and social influences that needs to be funneled or channeled in a positive direction if the sportsman or sportswoman is to achieve to their maximum potential.

Coaches develop physical and physiological fitness, and aim to provide the best possible environment and conditions for their participants’ maximal performance. They are frequently treated more as a mentor than a trainer.
