Course description

In a 12 week course you will practice and be assessed on ONE of the welding techniques listed below
SM9L1MIG - This is a 12 week course for MIG/MAGS - Metal Arc Gas Shielded Welding, which is offered on a Wednesday evening.
SM9L1MMA - This is a 12 week course for MMA - Manual Metal Arc Welding, which is offered on a Wednesday evening.
SM9L1OXY - This is a 12 week course for OXY - Oxyacetylene Welding, which is offered on a Wednesday evening.
SM9L1TIG - This is a 12 week course for TIG - Tungsten Arc Gas Shielded Welding (Low Carbon Steel) which is offered on a Wednesday evening.
The above courses in welding techniques are aimed at individuals wanting to learn how to weld successfully. The course is very "hands-on" and takes place in our well-equipped welding workshop. The topics covered are health and safety in the workshop, tools and safety equipment, and safe and correct use of welding sets. This course is suitable for a DIY person and those who have aspects of welding in their trade area, such as motor vehicle, maintenance engineering and fabricators.

SM9L2AWSF This course is a continuation of the Level 1 course which is offered on a Wednesday evening but at a more advanced level. Welding tasks are positional i.e. vertical and horizontal. All are destructively tested to BS4872. This course is suitable for learners who have achieved Level 1 or who have some industrial welding experience such as motor vehicle, maintenance engineering and fabricators.

Suitability - Who should attend?

There will be a set of five practical tests after each of the units studied to assess practical skills to the level of the qualification. All tests performed will be visually inspected for standard of finish and consistency.

Continuing Studies

Progression to one of the other City & Guilds 3268 Level 1 units:- MIG/MAGS - Metal Arc Gas Shielded Welding, TIG -Tungsten Arc Gas Shielded Welding (Low Carbon Steel) or OXY - Oxyacetylene Welding. This will be followed by a visual inspection test. Or progression to City & Guilds Level 2 Welding, followed by a destructive test.
