Course description

UAL Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma in Art & Design:

This course is a practical, work related alternative to the more theoretical A levels. Employers, Universities and Higher Education Colleges recognise successful completion of this course as the equivalent of two A3 Level qualifications.

Students on this course will be invited to attend cross-college events that will develop their job skills. Examples of previous events students have attended are:

UCAS Design your future
Skills London
London Higher Education Exhibition
Meet the Apprentice with the National Careers Service
University UK Search Fair

Art and Media students also work on external briefs set by different companies. This year we have worked with Sutton Council designing artwork for an alleyway in Sutton and designing lighting for the alleyway.

Course Content and Job Skills

First Year - units studied include:

Drawing and painting, including life drawing
Printmaking
Textiles
Fashion
Ceramics
History of Art & Design
Graphic design, illustration, 3D design
Multimedia and digital photography

Group and individual tutorials

Second Year (Dependent on successful completion of first year)
In the second year emphasis is placed on choosing a pathway to specialise in the selection of work for a portfolio and preparation for applications to University and employment. There is, additionally, a community arts project and a final major project in which students produce a detailed piece of research and practical work.
The course is based in the college's purpose-built Creative Industries area, which incorporates the newly redesigned art and design area, including printmaking and pottery areas, and multimedia suite.

Assessments

The course is continuously assessed in six week blocks. Some units are externally assessed by a final major project in the second year. For coursework, students must produce written reports, evaluations and show evidence of planning, research and organisational skills.

Progression

Students can progress to complete the second year in Art and Design, or an entry level job in the art or design industries. After completing the second year students can progress to a degree.
