Course description

Timely, objective, and thorough investigation of aviation safety events is a key element of any safety management system (SMS). When conducted within a "just culture", investigations will help to identify hazards, as well as opportunities for organisational learning and enhancement of safety culture.

For 2024, we have redeveloped our Accident Investigation for Aviation Management course to ensure that we focus on the application of best practice in investigation to the type of events that are typically investigated in-house by an Operator, Manufacturer, Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) or Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) organisation as part of their SMS.

Attendees will benefit from the expertise of experienced investigators, technical specialists and leading academic staff and learn through a series of lectures, workshops and a 3-day simulated investigation. Additional materials are provided online so that investigators understand how they interact with major (ICAO ‘Annex 13’ State-led) investigations, the news media and so on.

The Cranfield Safety and Accident Investigation Centre has delivered air safety investigation training for over 45 years and works closely with industry partners to deliver courses that are both practical and rigorous.

Suitability - Who should attend?

The course is designed for those who will conduct safety investigations as part of an aviation service provider’s safety management system. It is suitable for safety professionals who may work for aircraft operators (airlines, general aviation, and military aircraft); manufacturers, Air Navigation Service Providers; or Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) providers. It is also appropriate for those who may work within safety regulators who want a deeper understanding of the investigation process.

Note: those who play an active role in Annex 13 State-led investigations may find that the Fundamentals of Accident Investigation (3 weeks) and Aircraft Accident Investigation courses are more appropriate (6 weeks)
