Course description
This weekend course will look closely at the ‘hands on’ aspects of nursing, and will include numerous practical sessions, along with lectures devoted to patient monitoring techniques and also the theory behind the equipment we use. The course will have a ‘practical’ bias and will allow nurses to use and gain confidence in using, different types of monitoring equipment, various tubes and drains and aims to enhance clinical skills in ECG interpretation, biopsy sampling and practical CPR using manikins.
Specific areas to be covered:
- Practical triage and major body system assessment
- Monitoring techniques
- Pulse oximetry
- Blood pressure measurement
- ECG use and interpretation
- Central venous pressure measurement
- Anaesthesia monitoring equipment, including capnography
- Vascular access techniques
- Feeding tubes and their management
- Chest drains – when they are placed and how they are used
- Caring for tracheostomy patients
- Urinary catheterisation and collection systems
- Sutures – patterns and techniques
- Biopsy techniques – FNAs, Tru-cut
- Practical CPR
