Course description

GCSE English Language - PT Evening- GRENXE

Achieving at least a grade 4 in GCSE English Language can open up a wide range of new opportunities including promotion at work, university entrance, training courses (teaching/accountancy) or access courses. In addition, you will acquire skills which you can apply in many aspects of your everyday life.

As part of the course, you will learn to investigate and analyse language as well as experiment and use language, creatively. You will also learn advanced grammar rules, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation and sentence structure while developing your ability to understand and compare texts such as fiction and non-fiction on set themes. You will write reviews, articles and narratives as well as study spoken language.

Achieving this qualification will increase your confidence and motivation. The skills you gain will be invaluable in the workplace or in any further learning.

Suitability - Who should attend?

You would normally have a grade D/3 in GCSE English Language, a Level 1 or 2 Functional skills English or equivalent. However, there are no set entry requirements. Before starting the course, you will be assessed for suitability and to agree the level you can study. Prior qualifications will be used where appropriate.

Training Course Content

You will enhance your skills for life and further study through a wide range of tasks. These include: Practise reading:

  • Read literature fiction texts from the 20th and 21st century.
  • Read non-fiction texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st century.
  • Read literary non-fiction texts.

    Practise writing:
  • Descriptive.
  • Narrative.
  • Presenting a viewpoint.

    Practise speaking and listening:
  • Make a presentation.
  • Respond to questions and feedback.
  • Use standard English.

Course delivery details

  • 2.5 hours of classroom tuition per week, in the evening.
  • Homework.
  • e-learning through Century and directed self-study.

You will be regularly assessed during your course and receive feedback to help you develop the skills required for the external exams.

GCSE English Language is assessed in three parts:

  • Paper 1. Explorations in creative reading and writing. (Exam 1 hour 45 mins.)
  • Paper 2. Writers’ viewpoints and perspectives (Exam 1 hour 45 mins.)
  • Speaking and Listening: to be completed in class.
