Course description

The course is for civil engineering inspired learners wanting to continue their education through applied learning and wish to pursue or advance their career in construction. In addition to the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the study of civil engineering, the course will give students an experience of the breadth and depth of the sector that will prepare them for further study or training. The course is for students with a clear line of sight of progression to HND Level 5 and to a degree Lvl 6, as well as to gain the skill for work readiness in the construction sector.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Our typical offer is UCAS Tariff points 64 (new), or equivalent. BTEC Diploma at MM, Extended Diploma at MPP in construction-related qualifications. Other related Level 3 qualifications like Plumbing, Gas, or Electrical Installation will be considered. GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above (or equivalent point score) are required. An Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution and an application with a related work experience portfolio will be considered on individual bases. Also, an international equivalent of all the above will be assessed for possible enrolment.

All students who are non-native English speakers must demonstrate capability in English at a standard equivalent to IELTS 5.5; Reading and Writing must be at 5.5 or equivalent.

Training Course Content

This is a Part-Time course students study over 2 years, 1 day per week.

Level 4 will cover eight units with 15 credit value each:

Core Units (Mandatory)

Unit 1: Construction Design Project (Pearson-set)

Unit 3: Science & Materials

Unit 4: The Construction Environment

Unit 8: Mathematics for Construction

Specialist Units (Mandatory)

Unit 17: Civil Engineering Technology

Unit 19: Principles of Structural Design

Two additional units

Unit 6: Digital Applications for Construction Information

Unit 11: Financial Management & Business Practices in Construction

Course delivery details

To cover the required Guided Learning Hours (GLH), you will study 15 supervised hours per week to cover 11 hours theory, 3 hours of practical activities and a 1-hour tutorial to cover the activities below:

  • 74% classroom-based teaching
  • 20% workshop and laboratory experiments
  • 6% directed study and site visits
    Other 22.5 independent and unsupervised hours will be offered to contribute to the Total Learning (TL) hours as below.
  • 10 hours working on an assignment (45%)
  • 5 hours of research/ learning (22%)
  • 2.5 hours compilation of evidence (11%)
  • 5 hours e-learning (22%).

The course is assessed using ten written assignments. All the assignments are 100% assessed and marked internally by HCUC. One assignment is Pearson-set assignment, but the remaining assignments are HCUC set assignments. Assignments covered the theory and the practical elements of the assessment at the ratio 5:1

Continuing Studies

The course provides a solid grounding in Construction and the built environment (Civil Engineering), vendor accredited certification and Professional Body membership, upon which students can build; should they decide to continue their studies beyond the Certificate stage to Lvl 5 HND or even to Lve 6 Degree level subjected to meeting admission requirements to study Civil Engineering and other affiliated subject areas.
