Painting with Oils

I believe Art (Painting) can be taught, it was, and should be again, a craft as much as any other, as long as the student is willing to put in the practise and explore a set of methods and techniques that are part of the process.

This is a flexible course, teaching the basics of Oil Painting, aspects of theory, techniques and good practise that can set you on the way to creating confident painted works.

This course covers representational painting; think of artists like the Impressionists, John Singer Sargent, Alfred Munnings or Anders Zorn, and contemporary artists Richard Schmid, Jeremy Lipking or Ken Howard, then this is the course for you!

This course is for beginners and intermediary artists, but you will benefit from having spent at least a year exploring drawing skills. The sessions will introduce you to the tools, paints, mediums and supports and how best to use them. 　There will be an introduction to composition, step by step process of the creation of a painting and hopes to dispell some myths about painting and being an artist. The course will include painting from still-life and the best ways to use photographs as a resource for a painting.

During the sessions we will tackle different aspects for creating a painting, from starting a painting, tonal values, mixing and using colour, brush strokes, form and edges. As each session is quite short, it will be beneficial to continue the some paintings over a series of sessions, this will then give you time to develop the techniques and picture making methods. As the time is limited for each session, it will be better to work on a Canvas, board or Oil painting paper of around A4 or A3 size.
