What you will learn

There will be an initial presentation exploring the definition of ‘transfer techniques’ and the different methods and approaches used by artists. We will begin by constructing collages from a range of source materials. These can be drawn images, photographs, cutouts from magazines, soft textures, natural materials – bring anything you would like to incorporate in your print and we will discuss the possibilities!

Then, using a photocopy transfer technique inspired by Hanshita (the traditional method of pasting a design on thin paper onto a woodblock from which the key block is then carved), we will print our collages onto paper and/or a lino block. Participants can concentrate on creating prints using transfer techniques or focus on developing a lino block using transfer techniques as a starting point, opening up new approaches when faced with a blank printing block. There may also be scope to experiment with combining our lino prints with transfer techniques as a final outcome.

At the end of the first day, the tutor will give an introduction to lino tools and cutting techniques. You will be able to take your lino block home to work on prior to the second session, or alternatively we will continue to cut and print the block in the second and final session.

The second day will focus on cutting and printing your lino block and/or further experimenting with transfer techniques. We will aim to work in a quick, free and spontaneous way, focusing on opening up new ways of working and experimentation.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress ou your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
