NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety (Part-Time)

This Certificate is aimed at managers and supervisors who need to ensure that activities under their control are undertaken safely. It covers principles for health and safety management systems as well as the control of hazards in construction, demolition and excavation. We’ll prepare you to carry out a safety inspection of a construction site or other workplace, assessing hazards and controls, and recommending remedial actions.

The Certificate is well established as a leading health and safety award for the construction industry. Over 12,000 people have gained the Certificate since it was launched over 25 years ago.

The course is delivered by part-time study over nine months, with teaching usually taking place one evening per week (6-9pm). Teaching will be supplemented with private study. You can start the course in January, May or September.

Suitability - Who should attend?

There are no specific entry requirements, nor is previous health and safety knowledge necessary. Please be aware that the assessment includes a requirement to write a short report. International/English Language Requirements International applicants are required to have an English language qualification such as:

  • British Council International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of at least 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.5 in each component of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking
  • Pearson Academic score of at least 54 with a minimum score of 51 in each component of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking

The University also accepts many other English language qualifications. If you have any questions about our English language requirements please contact the International Admissions Office.

Once the Certificate has been completed, students will have the choice to enrol on the NEBOSH National Diploma.

Training Course Content

If your day-to-day responsibilities include activities that come under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, this Certificate will help you ensure that people are working safely. Students that enrol onto the Certificate in Construction who have previously completed the Certificate in Occupational health and safety don’t need to sit the NGC1 module as it is a common module throughout the two qualifications; this means that those students will be able to have a £500 reduction, but also start the qualification at the next intake point. The NEBOSH National Construction Certificate is a widely recognised and respected qualification and will consist of three units:

(NGC1) Management of Health and Safety

  • Foundations in health and safety
  • Health and safety management systems- Plan
  • Health and safety management systems- Do
  • Health and safety management systems- Check
  • Health and safety management systems- Act

(NCC1) Managing and Controlling Hazards in Construction Activities

  • Construction law and management
  • Construction site hazards and control
  • Vehicle and plant movement hazards and controls
  • Musculoskeletal hazards and control
  • Work equipment- hazards and risk control
  • Electrical safety
  • Fire safety
  • Chemical and biological health- hazards and risk control
  • Physical and psychological health- hazards and risk control
  • Excavation work and confined spaces- hazards and risk control
  • Demolition and deconstruction- hazards and risk control
